How to Make a Gradient in Photoshop

Method 1: Using the Gradient Tool

  1. Open Photoshop and create a new file or open an image.

  2. Select the Gradient Tool (G) from the toolbar.

    • If you see the Paint Bucket Tool, right-click it and choose Gradient Tool instead.

  3. Go to the top options bar, click the gradient preview box to open the Gradient Editor.

  4. Choose a preset or create your own:

    • Click on the color stops to edit them.

    • Add or remove stops by clicking below the gradient bar.

  5. Choose the gradient type:

    • Linear, Radial, Angle, Reflected, or Diamond.

  6. In your canvas, click and drag to apply the gradient:

    • Short drag = sharp gradient

    • Long drag = smoother blend


Method 2: Add Gradient as an Adjustment Layer

  1. Go to the Layers Panel > click the Adjustment Layer icon (half-filled circle).

  2. Select Gradient.

  3. In the Gradient Fill window:

    • Choose your gradient style and angle.

    • Click the gradient bar to customize colors.

  4. Press OK. You now have a non-destructive, editable gradient layer.


Method 3: Gradient Overlay (Layer Style)

  1. Select the layer you want to apply the gradient to (text, shape, etc.).

  2. Go to Layer > Layer Style > Gradient Overlay.

  3. Customize:

    • Change blend mode, angle, scale, and opacity.

    • Click on the gradient bar to open the Gradient Editor.

  4. Click OK to apply.
